Sovereign Grace Church was started in June 2005 as a new ‘church plant’ from Christchurch, Newport.
A ‘church plant’ is simply a group of people who move from a church in one location and begin a new church in another place. At Sovereign Grace Church we have been so blessed by the leaders and the members of Christchurch who have allowed wonderful people to leave to become the foundation of this church and who have also sacrificed financially so that this new local church might start.
The main reason for starting a new church in Merthyr was because of our conviction that God is still at work in this world today and it is still his desire to reach men and women with the truth of his gospel of grace. God sent his Son, Jesus, on the greatest rescue mission ever and God still wants draw people into His family and to free them from a life lived completely selfishly without any idea of the purpose for their existence.
A person who understands these things can truly experience peace, joy and hope in a world that sometimes seems determined crush us and fill us full of despair. One of the best ways of telling people this great news is by having a local church in an area who regularly meet and get out amongst people to let them know who God is and what He has done for them. This is what the apostle Paul did throughout the New Testament; he went from town to town telling people the truth and declaring what Jesus had done for them and usually left thriving local churches in each place that he visited.
Our intention is to be fully involved in our local communities displaying the reality of a life that is lived to please God not ourselves. Whilst we love and respect each of the churches in this town we also believe that God has called us to preach the gospel, win disciples and display His glory to Merthyr – what a privilege that is!
